The large Fernanda Pivano Square covers about 4,000 square meters. Included between the buildings of the complex that house the headquarters of Aon, NTT Data and L’Oréal Italia, it is subservient to public use and is designed as an ideal extension of the park of the nearby IULM complex.
The buildings’ scenic rooftops and the Podio green area provide opportunities for district users to meet and relax. In addition, the design of the development of the new L’Oréal headquarters included the creation of the new Parterre Square, a private space open to the public, and a tree-lined area, perfect for recreation and leisure.

The Sign is an ambitious project that, by applying the paradigm of integrated design and the LEED® environmental certification protocol, combines the efficiency of the building-plant system with the quality and comfort of indoor environments. With this approach, important sustainability and efficiency goals have been achieved: the buildings are Near Zero Energy Building (NZEB) in energy class “A,” with zero local emissions and LEED® Platinum certified.
BIODIVERCITY
THE SIGN IS THE FIRST MAJOR ITALIAN PROJECT TO ACHIEVE BIODIVERCITY® CONSTRUCTION CERTIFICATION.
BiodiverCity® Construction is an international certification that enhances and promotes biodiversity in new construction or redevelopment real estate projects.
The first lot of The Sign achieved BiodiverCity certification in 2021, becoming a trailblazer in Italy for achieving this recognition. Currently, the process is underway to certify the second batch as well.
The goals of the certification are to create new habitats that enrich the urban ecosystem and strengthen the local ecological network. These include green spaces with vegetation that can provide food, shelter and resting places for butterflies, birds, amphibians and reptiles.
An additional focus of the certification is the design of outdoor areas with high botanical and landscape quality, designed to reconnect people with nature by providing spaces for relaxation and decompression surrounded by greenery.
Compared to other neodistricts in Milan, The Sign has generated a variety of new environments to foster biodiversity, including meadows for butterflies and pollinators, two wetlands dedicated to aquatic flora and fauna, and watering points for insects and vertebrates. In addition, groves have been created and innovative wildlife equipment installed (bee bricks, insect hotels, seasonal bat boxes). The habitats are connected by a nature trail (biodiversity trail), which allows cognitive enjoyment of ecological features, integrated with a system of plazas with a wide variety of plants .
